Shotgun is a combination
of draw poker dealing and stud poker betting. Each player receives
three cards face down; then the deal is interrupted for a betting
interval. Each player next receives another face-down card, followed
by another betting interval; then a fifth face-down card, and still
another betting interval.
There is then a draw, and a final betting interval as in draw poker.
How to play: The values of hands are the same as in five-card poker.
One must learn to judge how good the possibilities are when only
three or four cards are held.
As a general rule, straight and flush possibilities should be disregarded
unless the cards held are of high rank and can therefore be turned
into high pairs. A high pair is a reasonable start in three cards,
but a low pair should be dropped. Remember that at each stage the
best hand going in figures to be the best hand coming out.
